It is rare to find an artist who has been a true nomad. Of Indian origin, born in Kenya in 1942 and raised in Ethiopia, E Costa is a contemporary abstract artist, who was born and raised in Africa. He left for Canada when he was 21, to study Fine Art at the University of Calgary and Urban & Environmental Design at York University, Toronto. For over 30 years, he worked as an artist, urban planner and architectural restorer, travelling the world solo, following his dreams. Having painted since he was 12 years old, he gradually worked his way through countries all over the globe, gathering local colours and customs to weave them into his own unique abstract tapestry.

Working out ways to live on a shoestring budget was a way of visionary “seeing.” Having no permanent anchor enabled him to interact with a plethora of artists, designers and architects worldwide. Regular visits to India lead to him setting up studios for a few years in Pondicherry and in Goa. He then chose to live in the Blue Mountains of the Nilgiris, where he shares a home with a poet partner, Tanya Mendonsa and a variety of animals.

The galleries here capture E Costa's studio, in a huge attic, perched amidst acres of rolling tea plantations in the Nilgiris. The continuous waltz of the changing skyscapes generate myriad variations of light and mood. The gentle Blue Mountain sun streams into the studio, to suddenly be sidestepped by a cocoon of clouds and mist, creating an otherwordly sense of limbo. Collectors and art aficionados visit to view his works in the intimacy of his studio-in-residence and to share endless cups of the finest Nilgiris tea.
