In pen and ink or coloured pencil on handmade paper, E Costa’s sketches are a visual journal of his travels through a variety of experiences in Zimbabwe, Kenya, Mexico, Spain, Guatemala and India. Freewheeling and beautifully detailed, they are intimate in their honesty.

Paper is an especially rich medium for E Costa. It lends itself to pen and ink, brush and acrylic, application of found objects and, especially, the beauty of blank spaces. The unsaid is as powerful as what is implied. The violence of certain images stun the viewer with their sources of pain.
